Theater der Welt is one of the most important international festivals for contemporary theatre and performance. From 14 to 31 May 2020, the festival, organised by the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and supported by the city of Düsseldorf, the state of NRW and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, will be held for the first time in Düsseldorf.
For three weeks about 40 creative productions and more than 300 artists from all continents and disciplines will stage guest performances in the city. With numerous projects in public space and manifold cooperations with local art and cultural institutions, Theater der Welt is a festival for the entire city. For the first time in the history of the festival there will be a theatre programme for children and young people in Düsseldorf, combined with an international youth congress lasting several days.
In the Schauspielhaus am Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, a lively festival centre is being created, which invites visitors to celebrate international theatre in all its facets with a supporting programme of lectures, guided tours, discussions, films and parties.
The Theater der Welt festival was founded in 1981 by the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) as a national initiative following the ITI festival Theater der Nationen (Hamburg 1979). Every three years Theater der Welt presents groundbreaking achievements and developments in theatre from all over the world. The last edition took place in 2017 in Hamburg.
